About This Campus

Located in the heart of downtown Honolulu near City Hall, the Early Education Center serves up to 168 children from 12-months through age 5. Despite its urban setting, EEC feels like a second home, with colorful classrooms. EEC is one of only two Seagull campuses offering infant and toddler care, starting at 12 months. The campus has been part of the downtown Honolulu community since 1986.

EEC Daily Schedule

6:30am: School opens; activities set up in classrooms
7:30am: Activities set up in yard and on lanai, Light breakfast
8:30am: Breakfast cleanup
9:00am: Morning meetings, singing, review calendar, colors, shapes, and overview of the day
9:30am: Cognitive and learning center activities
10:30am: Outdoor paly, large muscle activities
11:30am: Lunch
12:00pm: Clean up
12:15pm: Rest time, read books, quiet down
12:30pm: Nap time
2:30pm: Wake up, put blankets away, play outside/on the lanai
2:45pm: Snack time
3:00pm: Free play with choice of activities on lanai or in classroom
4:00pm: Sand play, ride bikes, outdoor activities
5:30pm: School closes

Meet the Director

Maria Shjegstad

Maria Shjegstad has been part of the Seagull Schools community for over 11 years, starting as a classroom teacher at the Early Education Center. During that time, she helped mentor more than half of EEC's current lead teachers. She holds a deep commitment to building inclusive classrooms where children and families feel pride and ownership in their school community.

As Director, her goal remains the same one she carried into the classroom: giving keiki happy childhoods. In her work, she focuses on partnering with families, teachers, and staff to make EEC a place where every child feels they belong.
