Kapolei

The Seagull School at Kapolei is conveniently located in the heart of the Kapolei business district across from the Kapolei shopping center. Constructed in 1995 specifically for young children, it is beautifully landscaped and surrounded on two sides by Kapolei Regional Park. The school resembles a small village with the unique feature of having an adult day services program integrated into its design. This has resulted in a nationally recognized intergenerational program where children and seniors come together for their mutual benefit.

The school is licensed by the State of Hawaii to care for 240 children aged 2 - 5 years and is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). It is open 7:00am to 5:30pm, Monday through Friday.

The school's twelve classrooms are each divided into smaller groups that allow for individualized attention. The highly qualified teaching staff is supported by the school's program director, Didi Au, and two office staff. This allows the teaching staff to focus their attention on the needs of the children and to receive support services when needed. The curriculum for 4 year old children is in agreement with the Hawaii Preschool Content Standards to help assure children's readiness for success in kindergarten.

In addition to four different playgrounds, the children also enjoy the benefits of being able to walk on short excursions through surrounding Kapolei Regional Park, the nearby state library, and nursing home.

Monthly excursions away from the center are planned as part of the curriculum, as well as on-campus special events with musicians, puppeteers, and storytellers. All are very hands-on, fun and educational.

Special activities are scheduled daily with the kupuna from the school's adult day services program that add to the family like atmosphere of the center.

Through participation in the Department of Agriculture Child Food Program, the school provides a nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack served family style. This allows children to serve themselves and develop additional skills and responsibilities that meet U.S.D.A. guidelines. Food should NOT BE SENT TO SCHOOL with children unless it is part of a special diet or due to allergies.

The center has a "No Candies" policy. Parents are not allowed to send cakes or candy to school.

The school has a parent/family group, Hui Lokahi, that demonstrates collaboration with families to provide an important connection between the school and home. The Hui Lokahi also provides a variety of activities and special events that support the school's curriculum.

In supporting the teaching of our environment friendly practice, we have placed recycling bins at the center. We are accepting all HI 5 beverage containers.

Parents and visitors are always welcome at the school and do not need an appointment.

Volunteers are highly valued and appreciated for their support and enrichment of our programs. If you would like to volunteer with Seagull School at Kapolei, call the school's office at 674-1444. Volunteering is fun and rewarding.
